So you are in the market for a nice tool chest. You have your tools scattered all over the place and need a central location to store them all in. Before you jump and get that huge toolbox, is this really what you need or want? Did you know that here are all kinds of different storage devices out there? Toolbelts and aprons have the distinct advantage of being very portable. While this is great if you need the mobility, they can't carry a lot of tools. So you might also need to get a chest in addition to a toolbelt and apron.

Toolsets are effectively molded plastic cases. They are good for holding a huge variety of various automotive or household tools. The case usually has a specific spot designated for a specific tool, and this means organizing is a much simpler process. In terms of advantages they are lightweight and inexpensive (two definite pluses). All this convenience does have one major drawback though. There is no ability to change the tools as they are made specifically for the various slots. There is no extra space if you happen to have other tools and accessories. All this means that you might need to purchase a chest in addition to a toolset.

Autocarts are utility carts that have a pivoting base and they are great for storing things in vehicles. Tradespersons use these devices to carry various tools, equipment, and various supplies. They are effectively shopping carts or portable truck boxes that can be transported around.

Bucket organizers consist of assorted "polyester bags" or "tough fabric" inside and outside of a 5 gallon bucket. They are both inexpensive and lightweight, and in terms of storage capabilities, they can rival either a chest or a toolbox. On the positive size, everything is visible (this could be a drawback if you have security concerns). On the other hand the advantages of a tool chest are that they are usually non-transparent and lockable. If you are going to be keeping your tools outdoors then you should definitely look at a tool chest. Before you jump out and purchase a bucket organizer keep in mind that the bucket is not usually included.

As you can see you are not limited to purchasing a tool chest if you want to store your tools and equipment.
