There are various ways to spend your time, but in this day of the internet and cable television it is a good idea to go out and get some exercise. Whether team sports or those of a more individualistic nature, something very physical, or something of the more intellectual variety, cities can offer them all. In this particular article we would like to provide you with a short synopsis:

Baseball

We will not forget America’s favorite pastime, which is baseball. While it is still a predominantly American sport, it is starting to spread its influence around the world. Since there have been various ball-and-bat games that have existed for years, it's hard to pinpoint the exact time that what we call baseball game into being. The earliest reference to baseball is in a English publication of 1744. In "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book" by John Newbery he shows a woodcut that has a field layout similar to to baseball. By the 1850's the baseball craze hit New York, and the rest is history.

Cycling


How about those who are interested in doing some cycling. Why not take a cycle out for a ride and get some exercise and fresh air as part of the process? You can consult the local tourist bureau or chamber of commerce for information on various cycle paths that will allow cyclists. Be very careful if you plan to ride your cycle on the roads.

Bowling

If you want to have a great time with some friends why not have a bowling night. There are all kinds of bowling lanes around any city, and an internet search or look into the local yellow pages will secure you a nearby lane. Early types of bowling may have existed as early as 300 A.D. in Germany. Ancient Finland and Yemen also had similar games. The first rules for modern bowling were developed in New York on Sept. 9, 1895.

Darts

Darts anyone? This favorite game of the Brits has become extremely popular in bars and pubs in cities around the world. While various similar board games have existed for years, the term "darts" now refers to a standardized game on a specific playing board with a specific set of rules.

Chess

If you are looking for brain stimulation why not have a game of chess? You won't get much of a workout, but your brain will sure feel used. A board game, its modern form emerged in Europe during the second half of the 15th century.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a general list of some of the sporting events that you can enjoy in a typical city like Raleigh. This is certainly not the full list for people who are into sports, but this will get you off on the right track to enjoying a city to the fullest.  Remember to have loads of fun, and enjoy that sport!!!
